Pencils not Included

When I think about illustration I think about approach. During college I used to find myself drawing thumbnail after thumbnail and I hated it with a burning passion. Constantly erasing and getting flustered by the confines of a small 3" by 3" square.

One evening in my drawing on location class at the Chelsea Highline, one of my professors stood looking over my shoulder, watching me while I drew in my moleskine with just my ink pen. He commented on how much he liked the look and feeling of the sketch and then proceeded to ask me how was I was able to do it so well without a pencil drawing beneath. I just said "I don't really know, I just kind of dive in. If I fuck up I just make it work." I kind of like when I mess up... it makes the illustration unique and interesting.

I was really starting to find my artistic voice my last semester of college... and it involved ink pens, water colors and maybe even a little pastel... no pencils included.

To me, an imperfect, shaky stroke is what I find beautiful. It's not about immaculate shading, or pin straight line quality. I'm a lover of fashion illustration, it's what I got my AAS in while studying at the Fashion Institute and I always find myself going back to it. I like drawing a different side of fashion. I like illustrating with a gritty, imperfect line. I like to show flaws in a beautiful way. I look through magazines for beautiful models and then I draw them the way I see them. Through my eyes, and they aren't perfect by any means, but they sure are beautiful.

The point of this entry? No point really, just a little back story to me. I plan on posting a lot of wonderful things soon, so I hope you will join me on my blogging journey.

and before I forget, Happy 4th of July!
